Jamal Mahjoub was born in London and brought up in Khartoum, Sudan. Originally trained as a geologist, he has worked at various times as a librarian, journalist and translator. He has published four previous novels, Navigation of a Rainmaker, Wings of Dust, In the Hour of Signs and The Carrier, which have been highly acclaimed and widely translated. Travelling with Djinns won the Prix de l’Astronable Etonnants Voyageurs.

Yasin is driving through Europe in a dilapidated Peugeot 504 with his seven-year-old son Leo. He’s not sure where they’re going.
