To survive, he and his teenage daughter are persuaded by Haim, a sympathetic Jewish friend, to take up an ingenious way of making a living that nets them a tidy sum of savings. But after the occupation of Palestine, they are eventually forced to leave their homeland and their savings behind, and go to live as refugees in Burj el-Barajny refugee camp in Beirut.
