Ten Arabic Plays – The winning texts for the International Monodrama Festival 2010-2012

The monodramas selected in this book are the ten winning plays in the 5th International Monodrama Festival to be held in Fujairah on 20-28 January 2012. The themes presented are diverse and varied encompassing a range of socio-political as well as cultural and personal dilemmas that face modern day citizens of the Arab world. They include advocating the need to give women more space as they find themselves trapped and frustrated by cultural and traditional mores, as presented in The Pianist and The Autumn of Memories.

They also show financial struggle and the need to reevaluate the importance and significance of devoting one’s life to making money, as presented in A Man and Six Suitcases and Bye Bye Gillo. The theme of broken dreams, estrangement and loss of identity related to political and cultural struggles appear in The Estrangement of Ibn Sirin, Nationality Palestinian, Abu Meow and The Blackbird and the Man. More humane probing into the meaning of the self and significance of life are apparent in Letters from a Lover and The Visa.
